CORNISH ASSOCIATION.

CHRISTMAS PARTY.

The Unity Hall presented an air of festivity last evening when the Auckland Cornish Association held a most enjoyable Christmas party. Mr. J. W. Cocks, president of the association, presided over the large gathering, at which the Cornish people also entertained their Devonshire and Welsh kinsfolk, who wore the respective badges of their county. Vases of brightly-coloured flowers which were arranged across the front of the stage looked most effective, while on either side gaily-coloured balloons intertwined with greenery added a further touch of brightness to the scene. In the centre stage was suspended the Comish badge, which represented fifteen gold coins on a black background, inscribed with the words " One and All." An interesting history is attached to this badge, as the fifteen gold coins were presented to the people of Cornwall together with the motto " One and All," by Richard 11. as they, in proportion to their population, contributed more than any other county toward his ransom. In extending a hearty welcome to those present, the president stated that they were delighted to have in their midst those whose homes were in Dovon and Wales and wished everyone a joyful and happy Christmas. Mr. W. H. Ball, responded on behalf of Devon and Wales. The programme opened with the community singing of the Cornish song, "Trelawney." This song was sung when Bishop Trelawney was imprisoned in the Tower of London and 20,000 Cornishmen armed with picks and shovels, were prepared to ford the Severn and go to his rescue, singing as they marched. During the evening Christmas carols were sung by the assembly and between these a number of round games caused much hearty pleasure. A song " Star of Bethlehem," by Miss Dora Cocks was thoroughly appreciated. Later supper was served by the ladies of the association, special articles of Cornish fare being included in the repast.
