HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME.

PROPOSALS OF COMPANY.

THE PRELIMINARY PLANS.

Preliminary plans of the proposed harbour bridge from Fanshawe Street, Freeman's Bay, to Stokes Point, Northcote, were submitted by the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company, Limited, at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. The company stated the Public Works Department had approved the plans, subject to the raising of one span to allow passage for high mast yachts, and tho company asked for the board's approval of the plans. The board's engineer, Mr. D. Holdernese, and the harbourmaster,' Captain H. H. Sergeant, reported that the plans were generally in accordance with the recommendations of the Waitemata Harbour Transit Facilities Commission, of May, 1930, and they were of the opinion that the board might reasonably endorse the commission's report and generally approve of a bridge complying with the conditions laid down. There would be ■a great amount of detail to be discussed and approved before plans were adopted and work was actually proceeded with. Matters to be considered would be the exact positions and size of piers and embankments and the preservation of navigation facilities during the period of construction. They considered that plans for final approval should embody an extension of the bridge proper across St. Mary's Bay in place of the solid embankment shjft-n on the preliminary plans, as art embankment would seriously interfere with yachting and boatbuilding activities in the area. The matter was referred to the board in committee.
