VALUELESS CHEQUES.
OFFENCE BY A YOUTH, COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Friday. A plea that the ease with which strangers can cash valueless cheques was a contributing factor to one of accused's offences was put forward by Mr. H. J. McMullin before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day on behalf of David Stanley Hogg, aged 18. Hogg pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining goods and money to the value of £4 10s by means of a valueless cheque and of stealing-an overcoat, valued at £4 4s. Accused also admitted having committed breaches of his probation order.
The magistrate said there was a good deal in Mr. McMullin's observation that valueless cheques could be cashed far too easily. However, only tho dishonest were tempted. The case was essentially one for a corrective sentence. Tho accused was sentenced to bo detained in a Borstal Institute for two years.
