HOUSE NEAR WARKWORTH. FAMILY'S NARROW ESCAPE. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. | WARKWORTH, Monday. A five-roomed house at the Streainlands soldiers' settlement, near Warkworth, owned and occupied by Mr. Fred. King, a returned soldier, was destroyed by fire at about two o'clock this morning. Mr. and Mrs. King and the children were awakened only just in time to get out of the house in their night attire. The cause of the fire is unknown. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday, A 15-year-old boy had a narrow escape when the building in which he was sleeping at his home in Park Terrace, Fendalton, caught fire early this morning. The building, which was detached from the house and comprised a motor garage, wash-house, tool shed and bedroom, was destroyed. The boy, who occupied the bedroom, was awakened by a crackling sound, and got outside clad only in his pyjamas as the flames burst into his room. IGNITION OP BITUMEN. WORKMAN BURNED ON ARM. While workmen were heating bitumen at the new premises being erected at Otahuhu for the Arctic Ice Cream Company, Limited, yesterday, the contents of the vat caught fire. Attempts by the men to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful, the dense black smoke and fumes preventing them from entering the freezing chamber where the fire occurred. The Otahuhu Fire Brigade was summoned and the outbreak suppressed before much damage was done. One of the workmen received a severe burn on the forearm through contact the liquid bitumen.
