DESPATCH OF NUCULA.
FUEL FOR THE DIOMEDE.
COSTLY DEMANDS OF UNION
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
The Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, states that there is an important reason for despatching the Admiralty tanker Nucula from New Zealand without delay, aa it is due at the French Marquesas, in the Eastern Pacific, to refuel the Diomede, which is now en route from Eng r ien<]; on her return to the Now Zealand station.
The Nucula has a complement of 40 naval ratings, and the Seamen's Union has demanded 47 men, although if the steamer was under private control 36 or fewer would suffice. Tho union demands regarding manning and conditions would involve such a great increase in the running cost, said the Minister, that it would be cheaper to transport oil fuel under private contract, and to return the Nucula to the Admiralty in England.
