FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD,

■ The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 19, 1880:

His Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon, Gov. ernor and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand, and Vice-Admiral, is- expected to arrive in Auckland Harbour to-day on board H.M.S. Danae. In anticipation ot his arrival a handsome triumphal arch, decorated and illuminated with the Royal Arms and Gordon Arms, has been erected at the entrance to the city from the wharf. The opening of the Te Aroha goldfield is announced for November 25 at 9 a.m. The maximum size of any claim will be five acres, or about 15 men's ground. The arrangements for pegging-off have been simplified as much as possible, but nothing can prevent a general scramble on th# day of opening. At the time specified the warden will be on the prospectors' claim, and will decide all disputes at onca as far as practicable. The original prospectors have during the last day or two suspended all work in their claim . owing to their having been put to considerable inconvenience and annovance by the number of visitors to the claim. The township near O'.Halloran's Hotel will soon be an accomplished fact. Several stores are being erected, a site for the Government buildings has been selected,' f and the contract for erecting the same let to Mr. James Lavery.
