FIRE INSURANCE RATES.

EXTENSION OF WATERWORKS. [BY TELEGIiArH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. Advice that representatives of the Fire Underwriters' Association' had yesterday inspected the borough waterworks system in connection with the request for reduction in the rates charged for fire insurance in Pukekohe, Was received by the Pukekohc Borough Council last evening. The association's decision would be conveyed to the council in the light of the knowledge gained by the inspection. The finance committee reported that the work would absorb the remaining waterworks loan moneys and incur a balance, which would require to be paid by the waterworks revenuo account. ' A petition signed by 102 ratepayers was lodged by the Pukekohe Chamber of Com- ' merce, asking that a poll bo again taken on the loan proposal for the installation of a sewerage system in the thickly populated area of the borough. It was agreed to suggest to tho chamber that a deputation should wait on the council in support of th=) petition. It was decided (o forward a remit to the forthcoming Municipal Conference, that legislation be enacted requiring the Post and Telegraph Department and otnor departments to consult tho local. authority before laying cables or carrying out other works in a street or road. Support was accorded tho protest of tho White Now Zealand League against the proposed establishment of a produce market at Auckland by a company largely financed by Chinese.
