YACHT RACING.

OPENING OF SEASON. | OUTBOARDS AT PANMURE. 1 nr SPINDRIFT. The 1930-31 yachting season in Auckland will be officially opened on Saturday afternoon, when combined harbour and cruising races will be held. Owing to the unfavourable weather lately a number of owners have been unable to complete their annual overhaul, and consequently these boats will not bo racing on Saturday. Very few large keel yachts will be represented, but the smaller boats are expected to inako a fairly good showing. The arrangements for opening day will be carried out by the Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association. The 16ft. S class boat, Cyclone, and the 14ft. Y class boat, Romp, broke away from their moorings at Heine Bay last week. The former was badly damaged. The Romp was more fortunate, and will soon be in commission again. A new 18ft. V class boat, built by Mr. D. Rogers, was launched last week-end. In appearance she is somewhat liko the Wild Wave, but is a bigger craft. Although the weather on Saturday was by no means favourable for the races conducted by the outboard division of the New Zealand Power-Boat Association in the Panmuro Basin, there was a largo attendance of outboard enthusiasts and the general public. Since the first series of races, many improvements have been carried out, with the result that on Saturday everything worked satisfactorily. The races were started to time and there were no delays between events. A large pontoon was moored directly off the starting line for the convenience of the competitors. Ashore, a platform was erected on the edge of the basin for the officials and the starting clock. The water in the basin was favourable for outboard racing, but no records were established. Tho hydroplane boats wore classified according to their speed, and some close finishes wcro recorded, especially in the last race, in which Ello defeated Pug by two seconds. Tho racing was more spectacular than that on tho previous meeting, and there were many thrilling moments, with no capsizes. Whether Auckland will bo represented in tho annual contest for the Sanders Cup at, Dunedin in February next will bo discussed lit, a meeting of tho Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association on Tuesday next. The various clubs have been asked to consider the matter this week iri order that their views may bo placed before the association. According to Lhe conditions governing the contest all challenges must be received by tho holder of the cup (Otago) not later than November 30. Each challenging body must nominate the boat to represent it 21 days prior to tho date fixed for tho contest. BATSMAN RECALLED. INCIDENT IN HOBART MATCH. In a C grado cricket match at Hobart on Saturday week an unusual position aroso. After an umpire had called " Over," one batsman walked unobserved to tho pavilion to change his bat. With the opening ball of tho next over tho striker was caught in the slips. It was then discovered that the batsman was missing from tho other end. Meanwhile, the batsman who was caught had gone to the pavilion. Ho was called back to continue his innings, but many held tho opinion that the umpires were wrong in bringing him back.
