PROGRESS OF ROAD WORKS.

PANMURE-HOWICK HIGHWAY.

The Panmure-Howick main highway, which is at present being reconstructed and paved i in concrete, will probably bo opened for' traffic be fori) Christmas Day. At yesterday's meetiing of the Manukau County Council, over which Mr. F. JL Waters presided, the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, reported that the reconstruction work was proceeding steadily but slowly. Adverse weather conditions had generally retarded the work, and of the three and three-quarter miles involved, approximately 50 chains of paving still remained to be done.

Mr. Page also reported that during the past month, an improvement in weather conditions had eased the heavy wear and tear on all road surfaces, and maintenance requirements, although still heavy, had been in most cases more or less overtaken. Relief works had been continued and as an additional item the two-mile length of road between Matingarahi and Kaiaua was under construction by several parties of men.
