ERECTION OF HOSTEL.

VICTORIA COLLEGE.

ACCEPTANCE OF TENDER

FUTURE EXTENSIONS PROPOSED

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday.

The Victoria College Board of Governors has accepted the tender of the Fletcher Construction Company for the erection of the first section of the college hostel made possible by the generosity of the late Mr. William Weir, who died in September, 1926. Mr. Weir, who was a resident of Wellington for over 50 years, provided in his will for the payment to the college council, after the deduction of death duties and about £9OOO for other bequests, of half the residue for the purchase of a site and the erection of a hostel for men students, and for the remainder of the estate to be lodged with the public trustee in trust for the council.

The site acquired in Salamanca Road is the property formerly occupied by the residence of the late Mr. Martin Kennedy and is regarded as an ideal one for the purpose. It is conveniently situated, within a few minutes' walk of the college. The site is sufficiently large to allow for future expansion and the present planned buildings are designed to permit of the building of two future hostel blocks and of another wing to the first block.
