CHRISTCHURCH GOSSIP.

WINNING JOCKEYS' FEES. GRAY HEADS THE LIST. CONCENTRATE SHOWS SORENESS. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHKISTCHURCH, Monday. E. Shaw's injury to his back is more serious than at first anticipated and he is likely to be confined to hospital for five or six weeks, while some time will elapse before he will be able to ride again. Ranelagh was palpably off colour in his races nt Riccarton last week and is to be treated to a three months' spell. His stablemate Pangolin will also be off the scene for some time as tho result of his bad fail on Saturday. Concentrate showed signs of shin soreness on Friday and owing to the prevailing tracks 011 Saturday it was not thought wise to start him in the, Metropolitan Handicap. He will be given a short let-up on his return to Trentham and will then bo prepared for tho Auckland Cup. The services of the successful sire Valkyrian, now stationed at Belfast, have been readily availed of this season.

Tho five successes gained by H. Gray at Iho New Zealand Cup meeting helped to place him at (he head of tho list of jockeys' fees with £'lss and ho was followed by R. Heed with £l2O and by the apprentice I\. Voitro with £lO9. The remaining principal amounts were collected by tho following:— H. Wiggins, £80; L. J. Ellis, £01; T. Green, £O3 10s; S. Gerrard, £SB; A. E. Ellis, £SB; Ti. G. Morris, £SO; R. Coveny, £52; W. Broughton, £49; A. Eastwood, £'-18; J. M. Price, £4O; D. O'Connor, £159; B. H. Morris, £3B; B. Brodie, £33; H. Goldfinch, £33; G. Humphries, £27; J. Barry, £25; A. Jenkins, £23; D. Cotton, £22; R. McTnvish, £22; and S. Wilson and R. Henshaw, £2O. Taxation for Government. Notwithstanding the extensive drop in the totalisator receipts at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting, the amount payable to tho Government in totalisalor and dividend taxes aggregates £15,174 Is, as against £15,337 7s 3d collected from last year's meeting. Tho Timaru owner-trainer Mr. E. H. Cuthberlson effected the purchase on Saturday of tho Hymestra five-year-old gelding Shortly from Mr. W. R. Kemball. Semper Paratus was missing from Saturday's programme at Riccarton. Ho ran such poor races earlier at tho meeting that his new owner has decided to give him a long spell before making his reappearance as a gelding. Merry Cry's Behaviour. The supporters of Merry Cry were unfortunato on Saturday that he failed to keep on the track when the field turned into tho straight. This gelding has a penchant for Btich behaviour and at the Napier Park Spring Meeting bolted two rounds of tho course before his race and then led tho field homo. With such a promising galloper it would seem a wise move to have a strong horseman to control him, instead of leaving him to tho tender mercies of a light apprentice. In the opinion of Mr. P. D. McNab tho best behaved fields of two-year-olds he has ever dealt with during his career as a starter were paraded at the Riccarton gathering. Although Mr. McNab's work was faultlesß throughout tho week, ho considers tho best despatches ho effected were attached to the four juvenile events on tho programme.
