THE STEEPLES CONTEST.

PENDAVIES' " DOUBLE." A PROFITABLE INVESTMENT. BOUGHT SIX WEEKS AGO. Only five started in the Clnrkin Steeplechase and Pendavies was installed favourite, although lie was at a good price considering tho weakness of tho opposition. The favourite never gave his supporters much cause for uneasiness, as he was always running along smoothly and jumping in great style. Seven furlongs from home he was challenged by Mashoor, but ho always bad the measure of that horse, and beat him easily at the finish by five lengths. Spalupin was a furlong away third, with Cullgio and Kawini another furlong further back. Pendavies was again assisted by his jumping, which was of a high standard. Old Kawini cut up badly after going once round and seems to have lost his dash entirely. Pendavies has quickly proved a profitable investment for Messrs. T. C. and H. W. Wilson, who purchased him six vteeks ago at tho auction sale of the horses belonging to their father, Mr. T. Wilson. Pendavies could not be guaranteed sound and in consequence the price paid was only 25 guineas. His two wins yesterday were worth •£227 and his second 011 Saturday £3O, making a total return of .£257. SURPRISE IN LAST RACE. VICTORY FOR STEADY FIRE. Another surprise was forthcoming in the Tauwhare High-weight Handicap. Steady Fire getting a break near tho homo turn and staying on to beat Antique. The bulk of the investments on tho race wero entrusted to the Antique-Sir Russell bracket and Sea Cob and the bracket was at odds-

Sir Russell and Steady Fire wero quickly in the lead to carry on the running from Sea Col) and Goodfcllow. Steady Fire drew out across the lop and came into the straight ahead of Sir Russell, who was clear of Sea Cob and Antique. Steady Fire stayed on well at the finish and scored by half a length from Antique. Sir Russell was three-parts of a length away third and Sea Cob a moderate fourth. The winner carried Gib. overweight and ran on well after gaining an advantage before reaching the straight. Antique came from a long way back. Ho did not appear to bo at homo in the soft ground along the back, but camo homo in good style. Sir Russell made a respectable showing and should be improved by the race. Sea Cob had every chance and stopped badly at the finish. Steady Fire carries the colours of Mr. F. "Wood, who also races Mangaui. THE EG MONT TRACKS. NOTES FROM HAWERA. REREMOANA TRIED OUT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAWERA, Monday. O. Cox has had that erstwhile great galloper Reremoana sent in again to bo tried out. He is carrying a lot of condition which will take some time to reduce.

Bright Glow is looking well and working nicely on the nawcra tracks, but as a rule her best efforts have been in the autumn.

The trainer M. Conway is giving Joyspear plenty of useful work and ho is thriving on it. His next public appearance will probably be at tho Fcilding meeting.

The Warden's work on tho Egmont tracks has been very good and he should run prominently in his next outing. Gasnapper is looking very nice and his work has been pleasiiis his connections.

Silvermine returned homo from Christ church during the week.

The Sheffield filly Kissless has been showing a little improvement in her work lately on tho Egmont tracks. The Sheffield—Gazeley Glean gelding is an ideal stamp of the thoroughbred and he has been doing his work in a nice manner on the Egmont tracks. Iciogne, the full sister to Mendip, has been getting through her schooling over tho fences in a pleasing manner. Good Trial Gallops. The two-year-old Gold Finder has been pleasing his trainer, C. Jackson, with the manner he has been working at Hawera. The Acre—Myrtle Grove gelding Garrick has been working well and tho race ho had at Waverley has improved him a great deal. The trainer W: Pine has Calamine working well at Hawera and in her next appearance, probably at Feilding, sho should race prominently.

Peg Black is thriving on the work her trainer R. Brough has been allotting her and in tho trials at Hawera sho ha 3 been displaying rare speed.

Banbridge's next appearance with tho colours up will be at Levin and hopes are entertained of him running prominently. Havering's win on the final day of tho Canterbury meeting was well received locally when he was well supported by tho stay-at-home bettors. Tho Tonbridge mare Anbridge, which has been used lately as a drover's hack in tho hope of curing her of bad manners, has joined up with M. Conway. She was formerly trained by J. Fryer. Bello Star looks none tho worse for her unsuccessful trip to Victoria. The two-year-old Cornerman is displaying plenty of speed and has been putting plenty of dash into his work on the Taranaki track. To Atiawa is looking 8 perfect picture and tho racing she has had lately should stand to her during tho holidays.

Sparkling Morn is a two-year-old which lias been pleasing the truck watchers at Now Plymouth. Tho Acre gelding Green Patch has been working along in a pleasing manner at New Plymouth. The connections of Easter Time have high hopes of him paying his way in his oarly racing career. The trainer J. O'Neill has Gibraltar in great fettle. Partaga, which was formerly trained at Hawera by C. Jackson for Mr. S. C. Tonks, has been disposed of to tho Bulls trainor A. E. Nealo, who took possession of tho Bisognc gelding during tho week. Callapat in Form. Nothing has been working better at Hawera than the G'allaghan gelding Gallupat.and when produced at Feildillg ho will carry a good deal of local support as this is his lucky course. Tho trainer E. Ccorgo is well pleased with tho manner Annoyer has been getting through his daily tasks at New Plymouth. Lady Quex is in excellent fettle for future engagements. The last has probably been seen of the Bisogno golding Whisogno on tho turf, as reports from Pihama stato thai he has broken down badly. Green Linnett is working along the right way at Hawera. The Levin Cup. The Levin Gup will bo of special interest to the district in that it will supply a couplo of runners in Hopwood and Orazone. Tho former on his running at Wavcrley should bo very hard to beat, but ho will meet with n tough proposition again in Pernden. Orazone may go a good race, but she has ono fault in that she is not a good traveller and generally runs her best races nearer home. Other horses from hero to appear at Levin are Green Linnett, Tho "Warden and Banbfidge, quite * nice team to represent tho province.
