MOTOR-CYCLE RACING.

EVENTS AT MANGERE. FAST TIMES REGISTERED. PERFORMANCE OF W. WHITE. Fast riding was seen at the motor-cycle races organised by the North Shore MotorCvcle ami Sports (. lub at llennirig's Speedway, Mangcrc, 011 Saturday afternoon, and it was very unfortunate that the meeting had to be abandoned after the fourth race on account of rain. The four races that were held proved exciting and there were two extremely closo finishes.

The track, which had been specially prepared was in good order for fast work, and the rain which fell in the morning effectively laid the dust, which has proved a nuisance to both riders and spectators at previous meetings. The downpour in the afternoon, however, reduced (he track to a sticky mass and it was impossible foV tho races to bo continued in safety. It was decided therefore to abandon the remaining races and run them at the cluli's next meeting in February. An Outstanding Performance. The most outstanding performance was that of W. White, who won tho two events in which he started with a 348 c.c. Velocette. He won the 350 c.c. championship and immediately after won the Northcote Handicap. In the second race he started from scratch and although matched against much larger machines, won by 50 yards after the roost exciting race of the afternoon. White's cornering was particularly good and ho lapped tho course in 5b 2-ss, which is approximately 80 miles an hour, a fine performance for a 23 horse power machine. Persistent ill-luck dogged E. S. Brookes, who was going well in two races when his motor failed. In the North Shoro Handicap lie was leading when the carburetter became loose and ho had to complete tho course holding the carburetter in place with one hand and driving with the other. A littlo later two engine bolts broke and although Brookes secured another mount, ho could not get it to go satisfactorily. 11. Beetson, who von the North Shoro Handicap, rode particularly well, as did D. McLaren and L. Perry, who finished second and third respectively in the 350 c.c. championship. It was Perry's first experience of racing and he did very well. He might have won with a little more experience in track-craft. Side-Car Race. Tho side-car race was rather disappointing, as there were only three started. M. Robinson (Royal Enfield), the winner, had a very generous handicap and W. Marshall (Norton), last year's winner, had no chance of catching him, as Robinson had nearly completed a lap before Marshall started. Marshall's cornering was particularly well done, and he was given every assistance by his passenger. A. Myers, 011 his big Indian, was going well until a spark-plug oiled up and practically halved his speed. The following are the results:— NORTH SHORE HANDICAP. Machines up to 250 c.c., four lacs. H. Beetson (Velocette). ecr 1 U. Howlett (Sun). 25s 2 E. S. Brookes (Rex-Acme), ecr . . . . 3 There were only four starters. A. Adams (Raleigh) got away first, followed by G. Howlett (Sun). After one lap. E. S. Brookes (Rex-Acme) was ahead, but fell back with carburetter trouble, H. Beetson (Velocette) taking the lead. Adams retired after two laps and Howlett proved no match for Beetson, who won by over half a lap. Time, 5m 365. KANGITOTO HANDICAP. Side-Car Outfits, four laps. M. Robinson (970 c.c. Royal Enfield). 70s 1 W. Marshall (583 c.c. Norton), scr . . 2 A. It. Myers (1205 c.c. Indian "4"), 20s 3 There were three starters. M. Robinson pot away first, followed by Myers and Marshall. Robinson was nearly a lap ahead .when the scratch man started but after one lup Marshall had passed Myerß, and had halved Robinson's lead. Marshall's cornering was particularly fine but he could not catch Robinson, who finished a quarter of a mile ahead. Time, 5m 435. 350 c.c. CHAMPIONSHIP, 4 LAI'S. W. White (Velocette) I D. McLaren (A.J.Sj 2 L. Perry (A.J.S.) 3 From a rolling start, the five men cot away well, W. White going into the lead on tho first corner. After one lap White and Perry were level, but White's superior cornering gave him nn advantage. On the second lap White and Perry were well ahead of the other three riders. Perry having a five yards' lead coming down the stroicht. Entering the last lap the. riders were in a bunch. White drew ahead on the back straight to win by 10 yards. McLaren camo up fast and just beat Perry for second place. Time, 4m 535. NORTHCOTE FIANDICAP. Machines up to 500 c.c., six laps. W. White (318 c.c. Velocette). scr . . . 1 W. Tremayne (498 c.c. New Hudson), Is . '2 W. Forder (493 c.c. Norton), scr . . . . 3 Christie (Norton) wus round first, makinsr good use of big handicap. Riding a 348 r.c. Velocette, W. White cnnie up very fast, being second to Tremayne after three laps. The limit men had all dropped well back at this stage. Tremayne. White and Forder being well ahead. Entering the last lap at over £0 miles an hour, White went ahead and beat Tremaynp by 50 yards. White rode a particularly good race, his fastest, lap being 50 for a mile and a-quarter. Time, Cm 8 l-ss.
