GOLDSMITH LETTER.

Tho British Museum has acquired a letter written in 1770 by Oliver (ioldsmith to his brother Maurice, in which he alludes, to his appointment to a professorship at tho lioyal Academy. Tho letter was written just before the publication of " Tho Deserted Village." Goldsmith laments his inability to help his poor relatives, and adds: "Tho King lias been lately pleased to make mo professor of ancient history in a Royal Academy of Painting, which he has just established, but there is no sallarv nnex'd, and I took it rather as a compliment to the institution than any benefit to myself.
