SHORT LOANS AND BILLS. Tho Bank of England rate of discount is 3 per cent., to which it was reduced on May 1 from 3£ per cent. Short loans are quoted at 2 per cent., compared with 1J per cent., last week. The market rate of discount for best three months' bills is 2- s per cent., as compared with 2 1-16 per cent, last week. Call money was at 2 per cent, all day. THE CITY MARKETS. YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. MORE STRAWBERRIES OFFERING. Most varieties of fruit mot with a steady demand in the City Markets yesterday. Large quantities of Fijian tomatoes came forward, and values for hothouse tomatoes eased as a result. Lemons met with a dull sale. Increased quantities of gooseberries found an easier market. Strawberries w<jre also offered in increased quantities. Ripe bananas met with a better demand. Canadian apples found a dull market. Heavy supplies of most varieties* of green vegetables came forward to the field and garden produce section. Kumaras were a little easier. Prices in the poultry section showed little change. There was a keen demand for good quality birds. Prices were as follows: FRUIT. As tho result of tho support of producers and tho co-operation of exporters this season will bo a record one in the shipment of Australian eggs to London. Shipments to October 31 include 32,110 cases, containing 11,559,600 eggs, while exporters have booked for November for export 19,500 cases, containing 7,020,000 eggs. Tho value of the eggs delivered in London for the 51,610 cases will he £107,381.
