STRUCK BY TRAMCAR.
WOMAN DIES FROM INJURIES. THE MOTORMAN EXONERATED. An inquest was held yesterday into the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Martin, aged 63, who died at the Auckland Hospital on October 25 as a result of injuries received through being knocked down by a tramcar at the foot of Queen Street on October 23. Charles James Norris, driver of the tram, said that although he applied the full air emergency brakes and the car stopped quickly, the woman was struck and knocked down. The tram ran about 3ft. after the accident.
Dr. S. B. Morris said that death was due to compression of the brain following a fracture of the skull. "It was one of those unfortunate accidents which just happen," said the coroner, Mr. E. K. Hunt, &.M., in returning his verdict that death was due to a fracture of the skull received through being accidentally knocked down by a tramcar. The coroner added that there was no blame attachable to the motorman of the tramcar.
