PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

ANIMAL WEEK PROFIT £l7O. ACTIVITIES OF THE SOCIETY. The executive committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met this week, Mr. L. Rhodes presiding. The report of the inspector showed that 71 animals, including 64 cats, had been humanely destroyed. Warnings had been given in cases of ill-treatment and thrashing of horses, and other instances. lieports from country inspectors gave details of investigations of many complaints, soveral warnings having been given, and treatment ordered.

Mr. George Watson was appointed honorary inspector at Mangakino, in tho Putarurn district.

Mr. D. Arthur reported that, through the generosity of Mesdamos Charles Nathan and 11. Henderson, it bad been possible to proceed with tho erection of a ward for cats at the Blue Cross Hospital, also of kennels with separate runs for dogs. It was anticipated that the work would bo completed by Christmas. A report was received from the ladies' committee giving details of tho recent Animal Welfare Week activities. Tho week's campaign resulted in a net profit of £l7O The secretary was instructed to send letters of thanks and appreciation to Mrs. M. Arthur, Misses Milburn and Elsie K. Morton for their work in this connection. i

A feature of the meeting was the presentation to Mr. L. Rhodes of a framed photograph of the animal welfare trophy recently donated L»y Miss E. Rendall. Mr. J. B. Patterson,' who made the presentation, spoke of Iho valuable services rendered by Mr. Rhodes to the society, and of the enthusiasm and interest ho had shown in its activities.
