PHEASANTS FOR SPORT.
LIBERATION NEAR AUCKLAND CONDITION OF TROUT STREAMS. The question of restricting the liberation of pheasants, in view of the fact that they provide food for stoats, weasels and other pests, was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society last evening. After discussion a motion that the usual amount of money should be spent on the liberation of pheasants, but that the allocations to particular districts be varied to suit tho uature of tho country, was carried. A report on trout fishing in the. society's area was received from Professor E. Percival, of tho Government Department of Fisheries, who recently conducted a tour of the area from Taumarunui to Auckland. The report stated that a very good impression had been gained. There appeared to be an abundance of fish food in the streams, but Professor Percival stressed the need cf conservation. He suggested that an aquatic insect, known in England as the blue-winged olive, could be introduced successfully in several of tho t Aueklafid' trout streams. It would provide an abundance of fish food over a long season. Tho insect was harmless. A report on the pukcko investigation re cently carried out was received. The investigation was undertaken to determine what typo of food the pukekos fed on and the report showed that very little grain was included in their diet.
