CRUSHED BY HEAVY PILE.
DEATH OF MAORI WORKER. BLOCK ROLLS DOWN SKIDS. [I)Y TELEGRAriT. —own* correspondent. ] DARGAVILLE. Thursday. While an employee of the Public Works Department, Ngapcra Panapa, a married man with four children, was assisting to load concrcto piles on to a railway truck nt Tangowahino yesterday afternoon, he was crushed to death. Tho evidence at tho inquest helri today concerning his death showed that tho deceased man and threo companions were engaged in jacking a pilo weighing '2.1, tons along inclined skids on to the railway truck. A pilo rolled back down tho skids and crushed Panapa, who slipped in endeavouring to escapo up a low bank. Tho piles were for uso on tho new railway bridgo over the Tangowahino Stream. The coroner, Mr. J. A. McLean, J.P., returned a verdict in accordance with tho medical evidence, that tho death was caused by shock and internal hemorrhage.
