THE BLUE SHAG.
PLEA FOR PRESERVATION. A motion that recommendations bo made to iho Minister of Intornal Affairs to have tho spotted shag and tlie blue shag placed under absoluto protection was carried at a meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society last evening. It was stated that as the species was of entirely marine habits and was now represented by only a few small colonies, steps should be takon to ensure their preservation. Mr. F. A. Falla, of tho Auckland Institute and Museum, slated in a. report that tho spotted shag was peculiar to New Zealand and was in danger of extermination. Tho nesting colonios were onco found on the north coast of Waiheko, tho Noisies and Shag Rock. More than half of these were abandoned about 1920 and since then tho decrease had beori rapid.
