Star Stranger has been galloping well, but lack of racing will be against him in a hard finish. Concentrate has staying abilities to recommend him, but is in the same category as Star Stranger and his turn may come later in the season. Merry Damon may take part in the finishing stages, but the last furlong will probably find him out. In the' Shade has a lot in his favour. Count Palatine, who will be ridden a few pounds c/verweight, has freely entered into discussions of late and his two gallops at Riccarton gained him many admirers. He ia a bold mover and stays' on well. Jfho public.wjll probably favour

La Poupee has been tho outstanding North Island performer under such conditions and judging by her track efforts at Riccarton she seems to act just as well on firm ground. Investors will have plenty of material to adjudicate upon, as • part from La Poupee, Esteem, Last March, Irish Chipftain, Hula Belle, Monastic and Golden Wings have filled places, and Tea Chat and Royal Baby have had the benefit of their Sydney experience. Always recognised as ono of the most difficult sprint races to win in New Zealand this year's Stewards' Handicap provides no exception. Much will depend on thei draw and the fortunes of candidates during the running. Tho problem facing investors is a great one, but the public will probably extend most support to HAVERING, TOXEUMA, MEADOW LARK. S.II—RICCARTON HANDICAP, Of £300: 9 fur. st. lb. e t. Ib. FINAL TRACK WORK. COURTESY'S PROSPECTS. MERRY DAMON IN FORM. [BY telegraph.—ou-n correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. There was not a great deal to interest track-watchers at Riccarton to-day. The majority of tho tasks were confined to short sprints. Johneen and Cessation ran six furlongs on tho grass in 1.17 1-5. with Johneen in front at the finish. Projection and Imateagirl wero restricted to five furlongs, covered in 1.3 1-5. Fair Weather ran away from Jordan over the final stages of a four-furlongs sprint and finished sis lengths in front in 493. Tho McLoan Stakes winner did his work well and is undoubtedly a good class youngster. Silvennine had a slight advantage from Arikinui at the end of half-a-milo run in 495. The Stewards' Handicap winner of 1928 does not appear to havo lost much of his brilliancy. Silver Coot and Pixie Gold sprinted three furlongs along the back in 375. and Grecian Prince executed u like task in 36 2-ss, Royal Baby going with him for two furlongs. Courageous and Shortly were together clear of Hynanna after galloping a usoful mile in 1.45 2-5.

A 1 Jobort comfortably beat Duniblanc over sis furlongs in 1.18 3-5. La Poupee's Half-mile. Gustavo was given a round at an easy paco on tho plough in company with Count Cavour. La Poupee easily accounted for Chief Cook and Chief Clerk in a four-furlongs sprint taking 50 l-ss. The Awapuni filly was never asked to do her best and could have made much better time. Lady Pam and Miss Ransom reeled off half-a-mila in 50s. Black Mint strode over a mile on the course proper in 1.46 3-ss, finishing on strongly. . Courtesy wa3 galloped on tho JJo. G grass and although under restraint early sho covered six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. With the ground to suit her she will keep tho opposition busy to-morrow. Song Box did promising work in beating Glenrowan over half-a-mile in 50s. Salmo Salar and High Gear ran six furlor.gg in 1.18 1-5. Both are expected to race prominently at the meeting. Hunting Day's Condition. Merry Damon was allotted a serviceable gallop over seven furlongs. He went eagerly over the first part, taking 12 3-5s for tho first three* furlongs, but came homo under pressure. Tho gelding is in good heart and should run a solid race in to-morrow's cup. Arrow Lad finished well clear of Tripping after galloping fcix furlongs in 1.17 '2-5. Brumal reeled off three furlongs along the back in 37 3-sh, and Monastic covered the samo distance in 30 2-53. Earthquake led Gold Pit and Lady Valkyrio home in a half-mile task in 51s, but Gold Pit ran away from her companions from tho.start and was being eased up over the lapt furlong, Hunting Day was given easy work on the plough. He has improved since arriving at Riccarlon, but is still on the light side and has not made up tho condition he lost, at Trentham. He will, however, fulfil his engagement to-morrow.

Esteem was restricted to half-pace work. Gray will be required to pilot Innuendo in the Welcome Stakes and up to this afternoon a rider had not been obtained for Esteem.

DIFFERENCE IN WEIGHT. MAKE UP AND PARIS. When Make Up and Paris raced as novice hurdlers at the Wellington winter meeting last July they finished second und third respectively to Avro in the Corunna Hack Hurdles on the second day. Make Up carried 9.10 and Paris 9.0. ns a result of his recent fino form Make Up is weighted at 11.13 in the Spring Hurdles at Hiccarton to-day, while Paris is on the minimum. 9.0. Make Up is therefore set to concede Paris H7lb. moro than when they met ut Trentham. Thero can be no dispute about Make Up's ability as a hurdler, particularly over two miles, but seeing that at the Grand National Meeting Paris won one mile and three-quarters raco and was second in another, besides finishing fourth in a two-nnles race, he appeals as one who might trouble the top weight.
