WIRELESS TELEPHONE.
LONG DISTANCE CALL. AUSTRALIA TO LOS ANGELES. The longest distance telephone call ever made from Australia was put through early on the morning of October 29, from Sydney to Los Angeles through London and New York. Although experiments have been in progress for some time, the wireless telephone service between Australia and New Zealand is not sufficiently reliable to justify its commercial operation. The Director of Postal Services said last, week that tests were being made on various wave-lengths to discover a set of conditions which would provide commercial communication continuously for about four hours at a time, suitable for business purposes in both countries. It was important to perfect the channel, as this would provide facilities for telephone communication between New Zealand and Great Britain. Negotiations are also in progress for a wireless telephono service between Australia and Java.
