HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. FAIR TO CLOUDY. The following weather forecast for 48 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied by Mr. 11. M. Vincent last evening:— Indications favour chiefly fair to fine weather in most districts to-day, although with increasing cloudiness, and rain fol lowing to-morrow, particularly in north ern areas, and central districts, of the North Island. A depression of tropical character is developing north-westward of the Dbminion, while a moderate high barometric .pressure system is located over New Zealand. South-westerly winds, moderate to strong, veering by' west and north to cast, then freshening, and increasing strong to galo in the north Strong south-easterlies ruling in southern areas Seas increasing on the east coast, particularly northward from East Cape Local outlook : Fair to cloudy, becoming ovelcast, and rain following after about 36 hours. Mild temperatures. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 30.051n. Midnight, Thursday .. 30.00 in. Temperatures in shado yesterday (to midnight)— Maximum, 63deg. ; minimum, SUdeg. GOVERNMENT REPORT. The Government meteorologist reported last as follows: —A rather sharp depression is advancing over tho southern Tasman Sea between two anti-Cyclones located respectively over New Zealand and eastern Australia. Indications are for moderato to south-westerly wind north of Kawhia 'and Napier, veering gradually to west and north-west, elsewhere freshening nortlierlies, but a change to southerlies setting in in tho south dur ing to-morrow, and, becoming general by Sunday morning. Seas in New Zealand waters smooth to moderate, but rising on the west coast, and about Foveaux Strait. Moderate to' fresh north to west winds, later backing to south-west, in the eastern Tasman Sea. Seas moderate, but rising in the central and southern portions. Weather fair at first, with milder temperatures, but becoming unsettled soon in western districts, with some rain, and later becoming fairly general. A cold change is probable after about 24 hours
