NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH RAMMING DOWN GELIGNITE. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OPOTIKI. Tuesday. An employee of the Public Works De-< • partment, Mr. John Young, while rami ming down a large charge of gelignite yesterday in the Waioeka Gorge, had a narrow escape from death. The gelignite exploded with tremendous force, throwing Mr. Young some distance away. He was struck on the body with a piece of rock and his arms were hit with stofaes.' He was admitted bo the Opotiki Hospital' and is progressing favour-? ably. v FINGERS BLOWN FROM HAND. ACCIDENT WITH DETONATOR. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. J OPOTIKI. Tuesday. While a Maori, Mr. Hall Jones, aged 40, was to-day preparing a change for blasting on the Public Works Department's works at Keru, about 49 miles frotn Opotiki, on the Coast Road. his. 'foot slipped and the detonator exploded, with the result that two fingers and the thumb of Mr. Jones' right hand were blown off. The injured man was taken to the Opotiki Hospital by Mr. J. N. Talbot this evening. <
