LAWN TENNIS.
OFFICIAL OPENINGS HELD. HARD COURTS AT THE DOMAIN. TIY SfDET.INTS. The Onehunga and Parnell Lawn Tennis Clubs held successful opening functions on Saturday and at tho former club the courts dried sufficiently to allow play late in the afternoon. The Remuera and Eden and Epsom Clubs will hold official openings next Saturday when progressive tournaments will be played. Onehunga and Parnell will also play progressive tourneys. Auckland players will bo pleased to hear that Messrs. E. W. Griffiths and E. Hickson, on behalf of tho association, have finalised arrangements with the Auckland City Council in connection with the hard courts at the Domain. Theso will be utilised for intor-club matches on Saturdays and will be open lo the public during tho week at a charge of threepence per half hour for each player. As theso courts arc conveniently situated and iri excellent condition they should supply a long-felt want for moro public tennis courts in Auckland. At tho end of last week the Stanley Street members decided to carry on as before with the four courts that are left. Although in every case the surface of the grass courts at city clubs bo satisfactory at tho time of opening, in most cases there aro altogether too many weeds in tho lawn. Most courts are more or less infested with weed, tho eradication of which is at any time a difficult problem. Possibly tho most effective method is to cut out tho larger tap-rOot varieties by hand and treat tho other weeds by a systematic top-dressing of the lawns with a mixture of sulphate of iron and sulphate of ammonia. Skimming off a given number of courts each year is to be recommended, as it this is done every court is dealt with within a comparatively short period and the weeds are givon a definite check and possibly kept out altogether.
