LOST NGATIMAMOE TRIBE.
Sir,—ln spite of the doubt cast on the possibility of the lost Maori tribe, the Ngatimamoe, still surviving in the wilds of the west Otago fiordland, Captain Roberts' story convinces me that they do exist. His statement has the genuine ring of truth, though somewhat strange. But truth is always strange? than fiction. As this part of the South Island contains much unexplored country, such a people could easily exist, as I for one believe they do. .At. any rate an expedition sent to thoroughly explore this country would do no harm, 'lhe presence of this tribe probably accounts for the deer, wapiti and moose being somewhat scarce and shy in that district. It may be of interest to readers that a live moa was also alleged to have been seen at Dusky bound many years ago by sonie whalers. There is also a remote possibility that some of them are still in existence if the foregoing be true- At any rate the time is. opportune for the thorough exploration of the Sounds districts.
