MORE VERANDAHS PROPOSED. SCHEME FOR WYNDHAM STREET. An endeavour is being made by the West of Queen Street Development Association to construct verandahs above the footpath on the south side of Wyndham Street from Queen Street to the intersection of liobson Street. Plans have been drawn up and a contract price secured for the work. The secretary of the association, Mr. George Jackson, stated yesterday that at present there was only one verandah on the south side of Wyndham Street, and the idea was to have a continuous line of verandahs. The majority of the firms approached were enthusiastic about, the scheme and the association would proceed with-the proposal if 75 per .cent, of the property owners concerned would agree. If this support was forthcoming, the work would be completed on a voluntary basis and the association would then consider what was to be done about verandahs outsidethe premises of owners who did not fall in with the scheme. The scheme was part of a plan to coordinate building operations in the area on which the association was concentrating, that between Queen Street, Wellesley Street West, Hobson Street and the waterfront. The design proposed, which had been approved by the City Council building inspector, provided for verandahs of a uniform type stepped down as the grade demanded, the verandahs being of the suspension typo, which did not require any posts. A uniform scheme for lighting shop windows in the street was also included in the proposal.
