ST. LEGER WINNER

LUCK OF THE SALE-RING

Af(ei Singapore's victory in the St. Leger at Doncaster last, month, a newspaper representative, when extending his congratulations to Lord Glanoly, asked him if there was anything outstanding about the colt as a yearling that induced him to pay such a big price as 12,500gn5. for him. Lord Glanely replied: " I bought him not only because of his good looks, but also because I thought ho would one day make u good ■tallion."

Captain Boyd Rochfort. when offering liiH congratulations at the Bamo time, recalled to Lord Glanely that he was the underbidder for the colt as a yearling. His present own'!! then remarked: " You will remember that I arrived at the sale ring only in time to put in the last few bids for him.' "If you had not put in an appearance at tho sale ring that day, 1 should have secured him for probably seven or eight thousand, as wo were the only bidders for him at the finish," said Captain Boyd Rochfort.

MOVIE STAR'S DAM.

NEVER BROKEN IN.

There are many breeders who contend that an ever-raced mare is of little use at (he stud; this has been borno out time and again. Apparently. Mr. W. G. Stead, the owner of Painted Screen (dam of the Breeders' Plate winner. Movio Star), had this in mind when he was weighing up the value of tin mare as a stud matron. Painted Screen never raced. She was never broken in. and was specially reserved for the stud. Painted Screen is a daughter of heighten, who was the best two-year-old in England in 1920, and who is closely related to Maltster and Bachelor's Double, while her dam is the imported mare Shrill. As a two-year-old, Leighton was unbeaten in England. and when, at his first start the following season, he contested the Derby, ho was a hot favourite. He finished fifth, and subsequently Mr. J. B. .Toel made an offer of £20,000 for the Hoi Herode horse, but it was refused.
