FINANCES OF BOROUGH. NORTH SHORE DESTRUCTOR. Satisfaction with tho financial position nf the Takapuna borough was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, at a meeting of tho council last evening. The town clerk, Mr. H. L. Bowden, stated that in tho six months ended September 30 tho receipts had totalled £33,061, while the expenditure had amounted to £34,700. The receipts as compared with the estimates made at the beginning of the year, were very satisfactory and the actual expenditure for the half-year compared verv favourably with tho estimates submitted at tho beginning of the year. A motion was passed congratulating the office staff on the good percentage of rates collected.
"The first thing to do is to ascertain the opinion of the Health Department on tho subject," said Mr. J. W. Williamson. referring to a letter from the Northcot o Borough Council, which advised that it wished to withdraw from tho destructor agreement on tho grounds that it disapproved of tho present renewal expenditure and of any prospective expenditure. It asked for the consent of tho Takapuna Council to its withdrawal, on tho condition that the expenditure incurred by tho Northcoto Council in connection with tho destructor should be repaid. " The agreomcnt was a business agreement and it must be terminated in a businesslike way, if at all," said, Mr. J. F. Colegrove. "I am not going to say what is right or what is wrong in connection with tho destructor, but the whole question must bo approached from a legal viewpoint." Ft was decided to write to the Health Department to ascertain its opinion. A tribute to tho work done by Mr. F. C. Fortzer and tho Bayswater-Belmont Progressive Association in beautifying areas adjacent to King Edward Avenue was paid by Air. J. A. Algie, who said a tremendous amount of time and energy had lieen spont and tho results were now showing. The council decided to call tho reserve on the eastern side of the road "Fortzer Reserve." The question of funds available for the purchase of trees for tho reserve was referred to tho Parks Committee for a report. Advico was received from the district engineer of the Public Works Department that the Government had approved of an unemployment relief subsidy totalling £251 in connection with tho £SO paid to the council as the proceeds of the ex-service-men's (lag day.
