PETROL IN AUSTRALIA.
ALLEGED PROFITEERING. INQUIRY BEING HELD. (Received October 8. 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY. Oct. 8. The acting--Prime Minister, Mr. J. 15. Kenton, announces that an inquiry is being held into alleged profiteering in petrol. Uo says tho landed cost of tho American spirit is 6Jd an imperial gallon, to which 4d is added as duty. Thus t here is a large" margin between tho landed cost and tho actual retail price, which now is 2s 3d a gallon.
