LOWER RAILWAY RATES.
MERCHANDISE FOR ROTORUA. OPERATION NEXT SATURDAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOTORUA, Wednesday. Representatives of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and the Rotorua Retailers' Association gathered this evening to meet Mr. A. W. Wcllsled, Railway Department agent, with reference to tho reduced rate 3 on (ho Rotorua lino, as affecting the carriage of goods. "I am quito frank with you and say it is with a good deal of reluctance that we aro reducing theso freights," said Mr. delisted. "You will understand this when you remember tlio loss of over £1,000,000 in the railways working account.
"Tho rates to all slations on the Roto ma lino aro reduced, as from next Saturday, but you nro primarily concerned with tho Rotorua rates. The proposed rates include delivery by your local ear riors. 'llio carriers will bo paid by us, so that as far as you arc concerned tho delivery will bo free. Allowing 5s a, ton for delivery, tho reductions over the. four classes amount to over £2 10s." Railway freights in tho light of the Royal Commission's report on the working railways were, discussed at the last meeting of tho Dargaville Chamber of Commerce. The opinion was expressed that if (lie freights were increased the farmers would bo severely affected, and tho following resolution was carried: —
"That this chamber views with alarm the recommendations of the Railway Commission with regard to increase of freight rates, especially those pertaining to freights payable by primary products.
