THE FILM SITUATION.
ATTITUDE OF EXHIBITORS. QUESTION OF FRESH CONTRACTS. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN COKUESrONnENT.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A conference of film exhibitors was held in Wellington this week to discuss tho position which has followed the imposition of the film hire tax. As it is reported that certain American producers are prepared to do business ro gardless of the general attitudo of tho organised American interests, thero is considerable activity among exhibitors in making tentativo arrangements for independent supplies. They arc concerned, however, over the possibility of tho sud den cessation of tho deadlock, and the severe competition which would nullify their emergency arrangements.
This would involvo serious financial losses, and it is understood the Government is being asked for protection against loss, if exhibitors, by their independent arrangements to overcome tho deadlock, aro led into financial obligations. Thero is a feeling among exhibitors that if the guarantee is forthcoming they could carry on business.
