WEIGHT-FOR-AGE CLASS.

NEW ZEALAND'S SUPREMACY. INTERESTING COMPARISONS. ENTRIES FOR COMING RACES. [FROM oun OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MELBOURNE. Oct. 2. On glancing through the entries for tho weight-for-ago races to be run at tho Melbourne Cup meeting it is impossible not to bo impressed by tho poor auality of the fields. Phar Lap dominates the position to such an extent that little interest is likely to be manifested in these races. It was hoped that another star might arise among the three-year-olds to challenge the supremacy of tho champion son of Night Raid, but such has not been tho case. When the Sydney gelding Tom Pinch was showing such splendid form as a two-year-old in the autumn the Sydney folk thought that they saw in hiin ft likely contender for weight-for-ago honours. Howover, up to the present he has shown himself to bo merely a sprinter, and it was not even thought worth while to enter him for tho weight-for-age races here. Sydney's crack three-year-old. Veilmond, has been entered for the longer-distance weight-for-age races, but the other three-year-olds ontered are not of much account. List of New Zealanders.

Somo time ago the chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, Mr. L. K. S. Mackinnon, referred to tho serious decline of staying thoroughbreds in Australia and paid a compliment to New Zealand's supremacy in that respect. It is, therefore, interesting to note tho number of New Zealand-bred or formerly New Zealandowned horsea who havo been entered for the weight-for-ago events. Here they are, the total number of entries in each caBO being given in parentheses:—

Melbourne Slakes, 1} miles (17).—Glare, Phar Lap, Nightmarch, Limerick, Waterline, Concentrato.

Linlithgow Stakes, one mile (25). —Glare, Riisouli, Phar Lap, Gesto, Waterline, Mystio Peak, Veilmond, Nightmarch, Limerick.

C. B. Fisher Plate, 1J miles (22). iGlare, Second Wind, Phar Lap, Concentrato, Veilmond, Nightmarch, Waterline, Limerick. Second Wind and Glare.

Tho longest handicap of the meeting, apart from tho Melbourne Cup, ia the V.R.C. Handicap, 1] miles, tor be run on the last day of the meeting. Fifty-four horses have been entered and no fewer than 10 aro New Zealandera or former New Zealanders. They aro Second Wind, King Quex, Glare, Amor, Sir Roy, First Acre, Paquito, Dalston, Papatu and Concentrate. Second Wind, who is by Grandcourt or Psychology from First Blow, showed his best form for some time when he ran second to Hasta in the Mooneo Valley Tullamarine Handicap. Ho should do well this spring, as J. Holt, who trains him for the Western Australian owner, Mr. E. Lee Steere, famed as the owner of Eurythmic, hns him in very forward condition. King Quex recently won a Sistance race in Adelaide and is always a possibility in a handicap. Glare continues his preparation smoothly. Ho is getting plenty of hard work and thriving on it. On Tuesday, with F. Dempsoy in tho saddle, ho ran a mile and a-quartor in 2m 12s, tho last six furlongs occupying lm 18}u. What is pleasing Glare's owner-trainer, J. Truskett, most is that tho gelding is always going better at tho end of his races. NEW ZEALAND HORSES. RETURNING FROM SYDNEY.' (Received Ootober 8, 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 8. Tho majority of the New Zealand trainers are to return to tho Dominion for the Wellington Cup meeting. Horses to bo shipped back on Friday week aro; —Gay Crest, Royal Baby, Adelphi, Paquito, Limerick and Dunraven. Thoso to bo sent back this week are: Clopton, Ammonra, Eaglet and Hard Words. FILLIES FOR DOMINION. SYDNEY THOROUGHBRED SALE. (Received October 8, 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY. Oct. 8. At a salo of thoroughbred geldings and fillies to-day, Mr. R. Allen (New Zealand), bought two grey fillies by Chrysolaus for 40 and CO guineas respectively, also a filly by Cistercian for 50 guineas. NEW RACING CHAIRMAN. THE OWNER OF MANFRED. [from our own correspondent.] MELBOURNE, Oct. 2. Having come through one of the most remarkable years in its history, tho Victoria Amateur Turf Club held its annual meeting a few days ago. Thero were six candidates for four vacancies on the committee and one of the new members to be elected was Dr. A. E. "yme, owner of the New Zealand-bred and n great admirer of New Zealand thoroughbreds. Many years ago he purchased Broadsword from the late Sir George Clifford and won tho A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap and other good races with tho son of Clanrannld. Tho new chairman, Mr. Bon. ChafTey, has had a lean timo as tn owner lately, but a few years ago his stable was greatly in the boom. For Mr. ChafTey Whittier won tho Caulfield Cup twico and tho Victoria Derby. He also owned that brilliant rascal Manfred, with whom he won both Derbies and the Caulfield Cup. Manfred lost several rich races through waywardness at the post, and it was owing to his bad habits that he was prematurely retired to tho stud. Already ono of his progeny has shown the way home in a two-year-old race in Adelaido. Mr. A. V. Hiskens, secretary of the Moonee Valley Racing Club, is now also secretary of the V.A.T.C., having succeeded Mr. T. A. Tabart, who sensationally resigned tho position following a serious disagreement with tho committee. RACING FIXTURES. October 9, 11—Dunedin Jockey Club. October 10, 11—Otaki Maori Racing Club.
