THEFT OF BENZINE.
CUSTOMER AT A PUMP. SEQUEL TO SELF-HELP METHOD. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT. ] PUKEKOHE. Wednesday. "This is not the usual case of theft of benzine," said the magistrate, Mr. F. 11. Levien, in tho I'ukekohe Police Court today in admitting a lorrv-driver, Robert James Watson, to probation for 12 months on two charges of stealing benzine at Te Kauwhata.
"Tho proprietors of (he pump from which tho petrol was taken contributed to tlio temptation," said the magistrate, "by allowing accused to pump his own requirements without any oversight l>y them." Sergeant Cowan said it was customary for accused and other customers of the firm owning tho puinp to take the handle and pump for themselves the benzine they required, and then pay for it. On September 10, accuserl tool; six gallons and paid for four. Some days later he took eight gallons, but paid only for four. On several other occasions he paid for less than he look. The total amount of benzino stolen bv accused was 20 gallons.
