PENDING BY-ELECTIONS.

INTEREST IN WAIPAWA. REFORM AND UNITED PARTIES*. [BY, TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIPUKT7RAU. Wednesday. The nomination of candidates for the Waipawa seat in Parliament, rendered vacant by the death of Sir George Hunter, closed at noon to-day. Two nominations were received, as follows:—. Mr. William Tucker, of Clive, Napior (Reform). • Mr. Albert Edward Ju 11, of Waipawa (United). ' ' . The election will be held on October 8. With only Reform and United candidates in the field tho electors have a clear-cut issue. Both the candidates' committees have been busy in tho past few days, and tho candidates have addressed two or three meetings each day. Mr. Tucker' has had the assistance of Mr. A/M. Samuel, M.P for Thames, Mr. David Jones, M.P. for Mid-Canterbury, and Mr. H. M. Camp, bell,, M.P, for Hawke's Bay, Mr. Adam Hamilton, member for Wallace, is due on Friday to assist in tho campaign. Mr. lucker held a meeting at Waipawa last evening. The gathering was most enthusiastic .and the theatre was crowded. The , Leader of tho Reform Party, Rt. Hon. J. G. C-oatcs, and the Hon. W. DowmV. Stewart will arrive next week and address the electors in several centres, It is stated that the acting-Prime Minister, Hon. 'E. A Ransom, and other Cabinet Ministers will visit the electorafe next wpqk to assist in Mr. Jull's campaign.

Nominations of " candidates for the Western Maori by-election,' necessitated by tho death of Sir.Maui I'omare, closed to-day. The following aro nominated:--Mr. Taito Te Tomo (Reform Party). Mir. Pei To Hurunui-Jones (Young Maori Party). Mir, Haami Tokouru Ratana (Ratana forty). The election will bo held on October 8.
