WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

BIItKDALE. | The resignation of Mrs. Wettenhall, first president of the Birkdalo Women's Institute, was received with much regret at the meeting of tho institute held last week. Mrs. Gilpin presided. The resolutions for tho Dominion conference to be held in Wellington in October wero discussed. Mrs. Coward gave recitations which wero much appreciated. Hostesses wero Mrs. Jeffries, Mrs. Jewel and Miss Wood. Recently Mrs. Hughes gave an At Homo in aid of the institute funds. The programme included songs by Mrs. Lee, pianoforto solo and recitation by Miss M. Hughes and competitions. During afternoon tea a discussion on cooking recipes proved helpful.

EDGECUMBE. Mrs. Eccles presided at a mooting of tho Edgccumbe Women's Institute. Mrs. Colebrook gavo a very interesting demonstration of raffia work and presented an attractivo cake basket as a prizo in a guessing competition won by Mrs. Mcxtcd. Tho roll call "My pet superstition," was well responded to and caused much amusement. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames W. G. Gow, Johnston, Marx and Cleaver. HOBSONVILLE. A report on the telephone connection between Hobsonvillo and Helensville, which is nearing completion, was given by the secretary of the Hobsonvillo Women's Institute at the monthly meeting which was held in the Hobsonville Hall. Mrs. W. Ocklcston presided. An address on first aid and homo nursing by Nurse Crozier proved most instructive to the members. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Miss Ockleston and Miss Armistead. A sale of plants and cuttings was most successful. <fc - KOPUARAHI. The Ivopuarahi Women's Institute met recently at the residence of Mrs. J. C. Miller. Mesdames Kneebone, Wilkins and Field were added to the committee. It was decided to have a sales table for the benefit of the institute's finances at future ipeetings. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames H. Bowen, Campbell, Candy, Flynn, Field and Heenan. PAENGAROA. A display of modern embroidery and ancient needlework, some of which dated back to the 17th century, and a collection of curios, proved of great interest to the members who attended the monthly meeting of the Paengaroa Women's Institute. Information regarding the annual conference to bo held at Wellington in October was given by tho secretary, Mrs. Cruickshank, who also stressed the importance of promoting rural interests in the institutes as recommended by the National Federation. Arrangements were mado for the holding of a potato-growing competition. The roll call, " what to make for bazaars " was responded to by each member, and a paper on the same subject was read by Mrs. W. T. Black. After tea had been served, the song " There's a Land" by Miss Burk was greatly enjoyed. Mrs. C. Anderson acted as accompanisto. Tho hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Tait, Mrs. Philips and Mrs. Summers.

SILVERDALE. An address upon dental treatment was given by Sister Faithful at a meeting of the Silverdalc Women's Institute, the loan of a dental chair by tho Hospital Board for use in tho district giving point to her remarks. Mrs Bartlett presided. An interesting talk upon arts and crafts was given by Miss Agnes Stops, who also showed some beautiful handwork made by the Women's Institutes in Britain. Tea was served by Mrs. Maeßao and Mrs. Bartlett. WOODHJLL. Tho Woodhill Women's Institute held their monthly meeting recently. The president, Mrs. Stanley Phillips, gave an interesting lccturette on " The Rise of the Opora," and also demonstrated the art of basket-making with raffia and cane. Miss Foster and Miss 0. Foster served afternoon tea.
