TOWN-PLANNING WORK.

ACTIVITIES OF INSTITUTE. NEED FOR FURTHER SUPPORT. EDUCATION AND LEGISLATION. Tho formation of strong and rapidlygrowing branches at Auckland and Glnistchurch is recorded in tho annual report of tho Town-Planning .Institute of New Zealand, which is to bo presented to the annual meeting in Wellington on October 29 by the president, Mr. Harold F. Johnston, K.C. " Perhaps the most important event wo have to record is tho formation of strong and rapidly-growing branches in Auckland and Christchurch," states tho report. " As the success of tho institute depends in 110 small degree upon tho formation and activities of branches, it is to bo hoped that other centres will emulate tho examplo of Christchurch and Auckland. There aro numerous town-plan-ning and allied associations throughout tho Dominion who would bo well advised to join forces with the institute. Such a step would increase rather than detract from their influence and utility in the localities in which thoy function." The report states that tho membership now stands at 171, 41 new members having been added sinco July 31. Tho first number of tho institute s journal, entitled " Community Planning, hud been published and issued to members. Tho journal would afford tho best means to form an enlightened public opinion, and there was a wealth of interesting and valuable information available, far moro indeed than could be used in tho present quarterly journal.

" Wo have now reached a stago when we can with advantago determine our policy in tho futuro, and it is proposed that immediately on tho termination oi formal business at tho general meeting wo should proceed to discussion of two matters of major importance, town-plan-ning education and legislation," concludes the report. "It is proposed to set up committees to deal with these and other problems, and the views or suggestions of members should bo of tho greatest .value and assistance to the committees." The balance-sheet shows a credit of £l2B.

Tho annual meeting will open with an official welcome by tho Mayor of Wellington. After formal business and tho election of officers, a discussion on townplanning education, led by Professor C. E. Knight, will A discussion on tho policy of tho instituto in regard to town-planning legislation will bo initiated by the director of town-planning, Mr. J. W. Mawson, who is secretary of tin institute.
