CARELESS MOTORISTS.
MENACE TO TRAVELLERS
STRONG FEELING IN SYDNEY.
There arc frequent remarks of a condemnatory character in regard to magistrates who deal with cases arising from motoring accidents in Sydney. Tho correspondent of trie Molhourno Argus says:— "It is pointed out that whereas sly grogsellers aro fined £IOO or otherwise severely dealt with motorists injuring persons—perhaps taking life after a lingering ill noss—get off with a fine of £lO or £ls. Theso penalties liavo no effect whatever in reducing the total of serious motoring accidents. Too often (hey are not genuine accidents but the results of reckless driving, induced by strong drink or innate indifference to tho safely of others. Persons so offending are regarded by thoso who use tho roads as a far greater menace than unlicensed purveyors of beei and ruin. It. is desired not that sly grogsellers should be treated more leniently but that reckless motorists should bo iiiad» to realise tho seriousness of their crimes. There is but ono way, it is thought., and that in imprisonment, or at any rate » fino (hat would cause real hardship.
