There was a startling and tremendous explosion yesterday from the crater of the volcano Stromboli, which broko out

Into extraordinary activity. Showers of flaming stones and molten matter were erupted and these started fires throughout the island. Four people were killed and nine injured. A destroyer and two torpedo boats have been despatched from Messina to tho relief of tho islanders.

A report that, the entire cone of the mountain was blown off is denied.

The volcano Stromboli is situated on the island of that name in tho Lipari group in the Mediterranean, from 15 to 30 miles from the north coast of Sicily and comprised in tho Provinco of Messina. The seven principal islands arc: Lipari, Vulcann, Stromboli, Salini Panaria, Felicudi, Alicudi and Uslica. LA 11 are mountainous and volcanic. The ancient crater of Stromboli occupies the centre of that island and tho existing active crater, more to tho north, constantly emits (lames, or rather illuminated vapour, but no lava, Stromboli is sometimes called the " lighthouse of the Mediterranean."
