PLAYS AND PLAYERS.

September 25 is announced as the opening date for the presentation of " Tutankhamen," which is to bo given by the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society in His Majesty's Theatre. Rehearsals have been in progress for Borne time and a successful season is confidently expected.

For its next production the Auckland Little Theatre Society has chosen a play by that delightful playwright, St. John Ervine. The title of the play is " Jane Clegg," and it will be produced for a season of four nights commencing on October 1. " Jane Clegg " was originally produced by Miss Horniman's Repertory Society at Manchester, but its success was so great that it was transferred to London and presented at the Royal Court Theatre, with Sybil Thorndike in the titlo role. The play is regarded by Mr. Ervine as his best work. This is the first play by this author to be undertaken by the Little Theatre Society and its production will bo awaited with considerable interest.

The Auckland Town Hall will be tho Mecca of all music lovers on Saturday, October 18, when Jan Kubelik, tho worldfamous violinist, will commence a season of four recitals. Final details of the tour, 'which is being arranged by Mr. Claud Kingston on behalf of Messrs. J. and N. Tait, have now been completed. Kubelik will open his New Zealand tour at Wellington on September 27, with additional recitals on October l.and 4. Ho will give recitals at Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wanganui and New Plymouth before appearing at Auckland. After the Auckland season he will give a recital at Hamilton on Tuesday, October 28, and will then visit the South Island, appearing in Christchurcb, Timaru and Dunedin.

After a long period of inactivity, His Majesty's Theatre will bo opened again to the public next month when a professional company will once more bo seen on the stage. The Edgeley-Dawe Company, which was seen here a few months ago with " Love Lies" and "So This is Love," will return early in October after the completion of a New Zealand tour, presenting as an opening show, " Hold Everything," the popular American musical comedy. It is probable that the company will add other plays, such as " Spring Is Here," and " Follow Through." In November aJ. C. Williamson Musical Comedy will arrive from Australia, with the spectacular musical production, " New Moon." Miss Marie Bremner will be the leading lady and she will be supported by a strong cast. Although no details are yet available it is hoped that the Edith Taliaferro Comedy Company will also visit Auckland with a number of New York stage successes.

Mr. Claud Kingston, manager of Kubolik's New Zealand tour, who arrived by tho Makura last week, states that there is no occasion to be pessimistic regarding tho support in Australia and New Zealand for concerts. There is, he says, a wonderful feeling throughout Australia toward legitimate music. The symphony orchestras of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth aro meeting with success, and notwithstanding the depression, are commanding appreciation on a scale hitherto unknown. Mr. Kingston has been amazed at the attendances at Kubelik's concerts in all the Australian cities visited, the house having been sold out on many occasions. It appears that Kubelik has expressed a desire to play with nn orchestra in New Zealand, should the opportunity present itself before his departure from the Dominion. The opportunity should bo attractive to local musical combinations.
