STORMY AT SEA.

GALES BUFFET STEAMERS, Stormy conditions prevailed on tho east coast on Thursday night and yesterday morning. Tho Richardson Line s motorship Awahou and tho Northern Company's steamer Claymore, which left Auckland for Whangarei on Thursday evening, wcro beset by a sovoro north-east galo as soon as they cleared the Rangitoto Channel, and were severely buffeted by rough head seas. The stormy conditions continued until the vessels reached the shelter of Whangarei Heads, tho wind at times reaching a velocity of 60 miles an hour. Tho Northern Company's steamer Clansman, which reached Auckland from Northern ports yesterday afternoon, was delayed for about seven hours by tho storm. 'Tho Federal Lino steamer Somerset arrived at Auckland from Liverpool yesterday morning and reported having encountered a hard north-east gale on Thursday night. Vessels on the west coast wero also buffeted by the storm. Tho Northern Company's motor vessel Hauturu made a prolonged trip of 27 hours from New Plymouth and did not reach Onehunga until seven o'clock last evening. She experienced a north-east gale on Thursday but tho wind changed to the north-west early yesterday morning, and did not moderate until late in tho day.
