BRITISH LIVE STOCK.

The British Ministry of Agriculture has issued the results of the first winter census of live stock taken on January 11, this year, which show considerable changes. The total number of cattle was 5,763,200, as against 5,957,594 in June last year. The sheep figures, however, are the most striking of all, although the absence of strictly comparable statistics prevents exact deductions. There is a reduction of 4,000,000 in the number of sheep (11.988,100) as compared with the previous June (16.105,453) or, roughly, 25 per cent. The decline was mainly in sheep under one year old, which are fewer by 3j million, or over 50 per cent. 'I he reduction is to be expected in view of tiie fact that the winter census was taken just before the beginning of the lambing season. Ewes and rams for breeding showed an appreciable increase, but the sheep of one year old and over fell by one million, or 46 per cent. Horses (956,000), were 43,000, or 4 per cent, fewer.
