THEFT CHARGE FAILS.

] PROSECUTION OF WOMAN

A charge, of stealing £9 13s 2d, the property of tho Government, preferred against Agnes Ada I'eid (Mr. ftmythe) was dismissed in the Police Court, yesterday. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, held tho action should be a civil claim. Chief-Detective Hammond said accused's husband, John Reid, made application to tho Labour Department for work and his name was taken. Another John Reid obtained work and half of his money was sent by mistake to tho address of the first man, the accused cashing the moneyorder.

Mr. Srnytho said accused considered the money had come from a brother-in-law, James Reid, who was also on relief work, and who owed money to her. The order ■was signed simply "J. Reid." Counsel contended that the proper remedy for the Public Works Department was to sue for ■the money, and this was upheld by the magistrate.
