LAWN TENNIS IN AMERICA. INVITATION TOURNAMENT. NEW YORK, August 27. At the invitation lawn tennis tournament at Brookline to-day, in the women's doubles Miss Betty Nuthall and Miss Marlowe defeated Miss Virginia Rice (Boston) and Miss Penelope Anderson (Richmond), 2—6, 6-2, 6—l. In tho men's doubles Bell and Mangin defeated Hall and Mercur, 4—6, 6—2, 6—3, 6—2; Tilden and Hunter defeated Oliff and Perry, 6—2, 7—5, 6—4; Lott and Doeg defeated Ellsworth Vines and Keith Gledhill (California), I—6,1 —6, 6—3, 4—6, B—6,8 —6, 6—4; Allison and Van Ryn defeated Sydney Wood and Frank Shields (New York)." 3—6, 6-3, 11—9, 3—6, 6-3. In the mixed doubles Miss Nuthall and Lott defeated Miss Anderson and James Nuthall, 6—l, 6—4; Helen Marlowe and Ellsworth Vines defeated Mercedes Marlowe and Godfree (England), B—6, 7—5.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY TOURNEY. ENGLAND DEFEATS SCOTLAND. CAPETOWN. August 27. At the women's hockey tournament in the third test match, England beat Scotland by 4 goals to 1. LONG-DISTANCE SWIM. CONTEST AT TORONTO. TORONTO, August 27. Marvin Nelson (Fort Dodge, Iowa) won the 15 miles swim to-day in 7h. 46m., and won £2OOO. Isador Spondor (Port Colborne, Ontario) was second. There were 173 starters.
