HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL.

GRANTS FOR MAINTENANCE. PROPOSAL FOR REVISION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Friday. Tho Hamilton High School Board of Governors met to-day, Mr. C. L. MacDairmid presiding.

Tho High School Old Boys' Association wrote enclosing a, cheque for £IOO as a contribution toward tho cost of building the school baths. The chairman said tlio school had given £IOO, qtid the board had £3OO of its own to allot to tho work. A suggestion that tho workbe done by relief labour was considered to bo impracticable. It was decided »o ask the Government for a subsidy on tho £2OO contributed.

Tlio Minister of Education wroto stating that under a section of Hie Education Act provision was niado for the payment of grants in accordance wiih regulations to secondary school boards for repairs and maintenance of school buildings. A regulation was made many venrs ago providing a capitation of £1 per pupil for this purpose, either from special grants or from endowment income. At tlio timo the regulation was made, only one board was affected. The position had altered very materially since and it was now found that so large a provision was not necessary.

The Minister said ho was, therefore, considering the question of revising the regulation with a view to providing for the maintenance of buildings only such sums as wore necessary and were approved by the Minister. It was decided to reply, stating that in the opinion of the board the annual giants for maintenance should not be »t the discretion of the but should be fixed on some definite ' and general principle, such ns a capitation basis, and that the various boards should bo entitled to grants on the principle, which might bo established, and should he at liberty to expend such grants in I heir discretion.' in the caso of tlio Hamilton High School the board considered that a capitation grant of at lenst 15s per head was required for maintenance and repairs.
