MUSIC WEEK.
SUCCESS OF FUNCTION.
WORK OF SCHOOL CHILDREN. One of the most gratifying features of the Auckland Music Week celebrations is the generous and enthusiastic support accorded to the undertaking by the people of the city. All of the concerts were well patronised, notwithstanding many outside attractions, and even on days when three concerts were given the houses seemed to bo in no way diminished. Aucklanders have shown in a convincing manner that musical talent in the city is very much alivo and they have acknowledged the demonstrations in a lively manner. * Whatover the financial results of the week may be—and it is. confidently expected that the undertaking will pay its expenses—the beneficial effects that have been obtained will bo well worth the trouble that has been taken.
One of the most interesting concerts was that contributed by the < combined schools choirs. A very high standard of musical activity was shown by the children and the various items in the programme were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present. It is pleasing, therefore, to hear that a combined schools choirs association has been formed, and that such concerts as the one heard on Tuesday evening will be a regular feature of musical activities in the future. The praise which has been extended to the pupils of the primary schools must also be extended to the secondary schools and the Roman Catholic schools which gave concerts of a very high order. Their value is important as showing the stage to which the musical ability brought in the primary schools can be developed in schools of higher grade. The other concerts have offered a wealth of variety and high-grade performance, which gives ground for the' most healthy optimism regarding the future of music in Auckland. It only remains to express a hope—which will be echoed in many quarters of the city—that" Music Week from this successful inauguration will be raised to the position of an annual celebration.
