MRS. CAREY'S PERFORMANCE. ACROSS THE DARDANELLES. CONSTANTINOPLE. August 17. Mrs. Carey, formerly Miss Mercedes Gleitze, to-day swam the Dardanelles at the widest part, a distance of four miles. BREAST-STROKE RECORD. FASTEST 500 METRES SWIM. PARIS, August 17. Mdlie. Yvonne John to-day won a 500 metres breast-stroke swimming race in 9m 45 2-5 s , and thus broke the women's world's record held by Miss D. Welch (Australia), of 10m 335.
