GASTRO-ENTERITIS.
EPIDEMIC IN SYDNEY. DEATH-RATE AMONG CHILDREN. The abnormally high deal); rate of patients suffering from gastroenteritis, which occurred at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney during January, February and March of this year, is referred to in the annual report of the institution. The increased percentage mortality, the report states, was due entirely to the deaths among infants suffering from gastroenteritis. The mortality reached as high as 45 per cent., despite every known method of treatment, regardless of expense, being tried to secure better results. The type of case differed in many respects from the gastro enteritis of previous years, in that the diseaso was more acute, more severe, and despite treatment rapidly progressed in many instances to a fatal termination. Had some of the patients been admitted earlier in their illness, the results would not have been so severe.
