ORDER DISOBEYED.

SMITH-DORRIEN IN WAR. CAUSE OF ALLIES SAVED. (Received August 13, 5.45 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, August 12. An outstanding incident in the career of the late General Sir Horace SmithDorricn was the stand he made in the retreat from Mons when commanding the 2nd Army Corps. He had been ordered by Sir John French to retreat from Le Cateau,; but disagreed with that policy and decided to fight. The enemy was at least twice as strong as General Smith-Dorrien's force, but the German advance was completely checked. Obituary notices of tho general declare that his disobedience saved tho Allies and the following admission of General von Kluck, the German Commander-in-Chief, is cited:— . • " I tried hard to outflank SmithDorrien, but could not do so. If I had succeeded the war would have been won by Germany.''
