TROTTING NOTES.

AT EPSOM.

CINDER TRACK IN" DEMAND.

PROGRESS OF GOLD JACKET.

With tho Auckland Trotting Club's -unemployment relief meeting praptically only a fortnight off, Epsom trainers are commencing to send 'their charges along seriously. The weather has been all against them Again this week, but, thanks to the cinder track being open, they have been enabled to give their horses useful tasks. ' ■' \' ' While .'.the footing provided on-, tho cinder track .does not allow of anything in the nature of fast times being recorded, it affords what has been long desired at Alexandra Park, a training track fit for use when the other tracks are unfit for work after wet weather. The sand track is also showing improvement lately, and those who cannot manage .the cinders are worked on it. - Matters were brisk on Tuesday morning, ivhen a large number of trainers put iji an appearance to take advantage of the favourible conditions prevailing. Tho most impressive efforts were recorded by Arachne, Hohora and Evelyn Locanda, while Explosion gave ft sound display of trotting. Goldman (C. G. Lee) and Direct Morning (W. E. Cockbill) were associated over a mile. They \vere in close company the greater portion of the journey. Direct Morning then put in a skip, and Goldman, doing his work solidly, finished in front. Evelyn Locanda Pleases. Evelyn Locanda (Brain): and Pavlova (Young) went away together from tho mile and a-half post, but the pace was very slow Over the first half-mile, when - Evelyn Locanda was pulling hard and Pavlova was going easily. .Over the last six furlongs the pace was increased, and Evelyn Locanda then showed too much speed for Pavlova. What promised 'to bo an interesting piece of work between Nelson Tasker and Chrystal was spoiled through Nelson Tosker's gear breaking. Chrystal, driven by Lee, was then sent over a mile. After covering a little more than half a mile good pace ho left his feet, but paced smoothly when he settled down again. Arachne (C. Fairman) infused plenty of dash into her.work' while going a mile and a-quarter._ Arachne displayed a fiue turn of speed when allowed to speed up in the final stages. ArachneV stable-mate Stoney, was worked over a mile and a-half, and appeared to revel in his task. Hohora was sent a mile and a-half by G, Webb, who lias lately taken charge of this erratic pacer. Hohora did not attempt to break, and went with plenty of determination; to accomplish a sound work-out. Great Vanity, in tho same stable, also" moved along nicely over the same distance. He is still very robust. Explosion, wio has been converted from a pacer to fl, trotter by W. Clifton, was right at home while trotting two miles. The big chestnut went solidly all the way, and is giving his connections every encouragement to keep him at the trotting gait. The Abbey Looks Well. The Abbey, who is one of the fittest horses trained at Epsom, inspired considerable dash into a spin over a mile and a-half. The Abbey was anxious to increase the speed and pulled very well. A very fine exhibition of trotting was given by the four-year-old Prince Triumph, who is an inmate of P. Smith's stable. Prince Triumph did not put a foot wrong while covering several circuits at a solid gait. This trotter is showing fine improvement under Smith's care. Another trotter to work was Lord Haldane, who was driven by K. Morrison. Over the final lap of a mile and a-half. he was travelling fast, when ho broke and was pulled tip.' . ;■ Mignonno' (L. McMahon) stepped along in good style over two laps, displaying a nice turn -of speed in the." last three furlongs. Mignonno is putting on more condition and is standing up to her work much- better than when she first arrived from the South. Lady. Ena hit out over four rounds, on the cinder track. Lady Ena went solidly from the start, arid if she would do this in her; races she would not be long in winning a> stake. . , , . : The English horse Antonia Direct (late Mussplini). was given a useful work-out without the straps, and accomplished the task in , pleasing fashion. He is still very big and is being given plenty of time to become used to New Zealand conditions. Mountain Dell's Work, Rolfe Audubon (A. Julian) went smoothly while working a mile and a-half on, the sand. The Worthy Bond—Haricpt colt was also indulged in a useful piece of work, and acquitted liimself well. Mountain Dell, in saddle 1 and unlioppled, also worked on the sand. Mountain Dell, who is in >rare trim for. early racing, was not bustled, and appeared anxious to go faster. Nella Dillon, who has .made a reappearance at Epsom under the charge of T. Robertson, was exercised on the same track in similar style, pacing freely over several circuits. Nella Dillon has thickened out a good deal during the winter. Yesterday morning the clay track was in good order, and a few horses who had not been given sound tasks on the previous day were sent along at a good pace. Gold Jacket covered a few circuits at a solid pace. The dual Auckland Cup winner stepped along with his accustomed freedom and is in great condition to continue New Zealand Cup preparation. Belle Axworthy, who has furnished into a fine mare during the winter, was not geared up, but she paced freely in useful work. Belle Axworthy has a very bright future.
